Following a statement from former President Donald Trump that he would defund public schools that require vaccines if elected, The Immunization Partnership called on Texas leaders who have endorsed Trump to stand up for Texans’ health.

HOUSTON, TX (March 5, 2024) — The Immunization Partnership Executive Director Terri Burke called on Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick to use their influence on their endorsed presidential candidate, former President Donald Trump, to demand he retract his comments that he would defund public schools that require vaccinations.

In a media statement, Burke said:

“The right to a live a healthy life is at the core of who we are as a state and a nation. Requirements for routine childhood vaccinations help get us there. It’s simple: Students can’t be learning and thriving if they’re home sick with preventable diseases.

The alarming recurrence of diseases like measle and meningitis — diseases that vaccines prevent but have resurfaced due to declining vaccination rates — should be evidence enough.

Today especially, Gov. Abbott and Lt. Gov. Patrick should stand up for the best interests of Texans and their children and call out anyone who seeks to do harm to our most vulnerable Americans. Texans deserve better.”
